Exposing what dwells within.

I am so very excited to finally be able to share these images!  Last Spring I was contracted to style and photograph a summer meal created by Chef Mike Peterson of Mount Vernon Farm for Inspired, the Willowsford Virginia Lifestyle publication. I spent the day in my friend Stephanie's kitchen as she slaved away making the entire menu twice.  She's a trooper, that one.  I learned so much from the experience, including that it is a little crazy to prep, style, and photograph 4 individual recipes, and then to do it all over again for the big overhead table shot, all in one day.  Next time, we won't be so ambitious and will give ourselves more time, or more hands in the kitchen.  But, we ate well that evening, and slept deeply that night!

I am very proud of the resulting images and the 5-page spread in Inspired. Many thanks to my friends at Piedmont Media for recommending me for this shoot, to Amy for loaning me fabulous props, to Stephanie for cooking, to Brian for helping me build the pallet table, and to Evan for keeping Steph and I supplied with wine at the end of the day.  This was very much a group effort and could never have been accomplished without each one of you!

caitlin + kevin | married 10.08.2011

Lifeandrea

Caitlin + Kevin were married in Crozet, in front of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on October 8th. These two and their friends were completely awesome...so trusting and enthusiastic about all of our suggestions. They followed their sweet nuptials with a party at the X Lounge, but not until Brian and I took them on a detour to a downtown parking garage. Let me just say...I love a couple that is excited when we throw out the suggestion "how about bridal party portraits on top of the garage?"!!! With backgrounds similar to our own (both graduated with degrees in architecture) we knew that the commanding lines and warm concrete would be right up their alley. :)

When planning their wedding, Caitlin + Kevin simply wanted to 'get married in a field' and 'rent out a bar with all of our closest friends and family'. They succeeded, and the resulting laid-back nuptials were so much fun to be part of. Big Hokie fans, the bride and groom even went so far as to have the game playing during their X-Lounge party. The Hokies must have gotten the memo, because they were kind enough to win their game against the University of Miami. The images of the final minutes of the game are some of my favorites.

Caitlin + Kevin...thank you for inviting us to be part of your day and for trusting our ideas. We wish you a lifetime of happiness, and hope that our designer paths cross again one day soon.  xoxo.

roxie daisy

Retail, Spaceandrea

Have you been to Roxie Daisy in downtown Charlottesville yet? Such a fabulous shop! I am so excited to have a new option for home decor and styling here locally. Karen has fabulous taste...I have a very long wishlist of items she's hand selected for her store that I need in my home. The space and merchandise are beautifully styled by Wendy Umanoff, who worked with us for this day-long shoot. These images are to be used for the new Roxie Daisy website, which is in design and development by Adam of Land of Yogg.  This was such a fun team to work with...I am really proud of the final images and can't wait to see them on the new site!

october in virginia

Lifeandrea

October is my very favorite month in Virginia. Today we took advantage of a beautiful afternoon and met friends in Afton for the Cardinal Point Oyster Roast.  Afterwards, we took the long way home so that I could grab shots of the unbelievably gorgeous light and sky that I kept geeking out over.  I brought only a film camera with me, but couldn't resist some instant gratification with my iphone. The shots with me in them were, obviously, taken by Brian. :)

Happy Fall!!!

eliza + ben | married 09.24.2011

Lifeandrea

Eliza and Ben were married at James Monroe's historic home, Ash Lawn-Highland, on September 24, 2011. Clouds lingered overhead without spilling a drop, keeping the temperature pleasant for this lovely outdoor wedding. E+B have an incredible group of friends and family that came together to make their day the perfect celebration of their love, and Brian and I were honored to be part of it. This was one of the most emotional ceremonies we've been witness to, with not a dry eye under the trees. And, who doesn't love a wedding with the tarantella mid-reception?!?

Thank you, Eliza and Ben, for keeping us laughing the entire day. You two are such fun, and obviously so in tune with each other. We loved how you seemed to forget we were present during portraits, completely consumed with each other and your joy. We wish you a lifetime of happiness, and look forward to cultivating our growing friendship. xoxo.

Check out the latest Edible Blueridge for a fantastic article about Free Union Grass Farm. Erica Hellen and Joel Slezak are the biggest producers of duck in our area, using Polyface-style farming which allows the birds to graze from one end of the field to another. I enjoyed meeting and photographing the two and their ducks while Natalie Russell, editor of Edible Blueridge, engaged them in conversation about their farm. The opportunity to meet local farmers is one of the many reasons I really, really love my job...

And last week's C-Ville Weekly featured a few Andrea Hubbell images as well. A torta di mele (apple tart) and the opportunity to meet Peter Hatch, the Director of Gardens and Grounds at Monticello made this my kind of issue.

fall at scarpa

Retail, Spaceandrea

Autumn has arrived. She is evident in the gray skies, fallen leaves, and within the walls of SCARPA. I am loving the vivid pops of sapphire, magenta, and coral mixed with the season's best neutrals. Warning, the images below could result in the lightening of your wallet...

[by the way...the SCARPA website was designed and built by my oh-so-talented husband!]

liberty mills residence for loring woodriff

Spaceandrea

This may be my dream country home. Situated 25 minutes outside of Charlottesville in Somerset (close to Montpelier) on a gorgeous, rolling property with Rapidan River frontage, this C. 1856 house has been beautifully renovated by architect Kevin Davis. Remember his family's lovely Charlottesville home that I photographed last spring? You can imagine my excitement when I was called again to photograph this residence of his, which has been perfectly decorated by Kevin and his wife, Holly. I couldn't stop exclaming over the fabrics, textures, furniture and details they used throughout; loving the mix of modern and traditional pieces.

This home is for sale and represented by Loring Woodriff.

the stone walls at the front of the property are really lovely.

love this downstairs hall space. especially the color, which brian and i painted our bedroom 8 months ago! benjamin moore kendall charcoal.

i have a major crush on this chair.

those textures!

i'm pretty crazy about this chair, too. bright teal naugahyde!

this bathtub! swoon.

the perfect place for this end-of-summer meal.

food photography + styling workshop at the heritage harvest festival [tomorrow!]

Lifeandrea

Tomorrow is the Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello, the first of Charlottesville's fall celebrations that add to my love for the season. This year I will be giving a little workshop/demonstration/chat about food photography and styling under the Relay Foods tent at 10:15am. I hope you can join us! It will be a very informal affair, and my presentation is pretty short so I'm guessing I will give it a few times over the hour allotted to me. If you're at the festival (and you should be, for so many reasons!!!) I'd love for you to stop by and say hi!

sandy point

Spaceandrea

Last June, the day after I photographed this wedding, I found myself on the eastern shore of Virginia. I'd been asked to visit the community of Sandy Point to capture the essence of a home and its surrounding landscape in 20 hours. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and I immediately got to work photographing this +100 years old building that once functioned as a bunk house at a ferry boat landing just down the point. I fell in love with the charming, unpretentious nature of the place: the real wood paneling, the campy feel, the treasures found and placed years ago. I stayed the night, shared a meal with the property owners and heard stories of fish and birds and watercraft. We even went night fishing, a quietly exhillerating sport that relies solely on the sense of feeling the line on your fingertips.  The next morning we rose with the sun, ventured back out on the water and captured the community at its shore.

In 20 hours I formed a connection with Sandy Point; to the water and the shore and the pine forest that reminds me of Florida. I hope to visit again, one day soon. You can, too, as the house will be available to rent for weekends and longer. When I have more information on how you can do just that, I will share it here. Until then...

Sandy Point.

I've loved watching these two cutie pies grow! Here is my first session with Grace (well, second, but I didn't have a blog yet for the 1st!) and my first with both girls is here.

Also, have you been to Forest Hills Spray Park yet? So much fun!!!
