beyond the flavor | breakfast and pizza and pintos, oh my!

Foodandrea

I've done a horrible job of keeping up with images from our features on Beyond the Flavor over here on the Andrea Hubbell blog. Be sure to check out these amazing people and their delicious recipes!

And, if you're not familiar with Beyond the Flavor, here's what we're all about: Our mission is to inspire readers with the stories of Charlottesville's farmers, chefs, winemakers, and artisans told through beautiful photographs and evocative words, most often centered around their preparation and sharing of a meaningful meal.  By documenting who makes up this town that's so dedicated to the locavore movement, we aim to be the visual voice for everyone who believes that ideal nourishment comes from the earth, people, and passion within our own communities. (thank you, Megan Headley, for summing us up so perfectly.)

Now, go eat!

living space | abby kasonik and roderick coles

Living Space, Spaceandrea

This is the home of Abby Kasonik and Roderick Coles. I knew before I stepped across the threshold that their home would be extraordinary. She's an artist, he owns The Curious Orange, and together they've created a living space filled with a collection of furniture, art, and objects that reflect the creativity that drives their life. I first met Abby when I photographed her backyard studio for Cville Abode. She invited me into her home for a tour and I immediately fell head over heels for her style. Lush fabrics, dark wood, gilded mirrors, found objects and giant house plants had me swooning in each room we entered. I am so grateful that she agreed to be part of my living space project, inviting me back on a cold morning two weeks ago.

These images are not styled. Abby understood my intention to capture details of the life lived within the walls of her home, and purposefully refrained from throwing out flowers past their prime or removing laundry from an upstairs bed. I adore her. Because the point of this project is not to capture perfect, spotless interiors. The point is to capture real life in an evocative way. To attempt to insert myself into these spaces and see them the way their owners' do. To sit on the couch and take a moment to look around, to let the light hitting the pillow beside my shoulder move me to capture an image of that one little detail that makes sitting on that couch, in that space, at that time...special.

Abby and Rod, thank you for allowing me into your life for one morning. I hope these images evoke the same emotion for you as they do for me.

If you have or know of a living space that would photograph well for this series, please contact me here.

elizabeth + andrew | engaged!

Lifeandrea

Elizabeth and Andrew are getting married April 27, 2013!  We spent a lovely Charlottesville morning in early October wandering the City Market, Downtown, and Riverview Park with their sweet pup, Lloyd. These two were high school sweethearts and have so much fun together, and Elizabeth has the most amazing laugh!  I loved getting to know them better, and meeting Lloyd who will be part of their Pippin Hill wedding next Spring!

So, before we lose power (and all of our leaves!), enjoy this lovely Autumn morning spent with Elizabeth, Andrew, + Lloyd!

ginny + wes | married 09.29.12 in abingdon, va!

Lifeandrea

Ginny + Wes were married in Abingdon, Virginia on September 29, 2012! The sky threatened rain throughout the day, but cooperated and delivered a sunshine-filled ceremony and walk to the neighboring reception just after. Autumn had just arrived in Abingdon, kissing the trees with hints of red and orange. Ginny's grandmother graciously offered up her home - an incredible structure that functioned as a bank during the Civil War - for the reception. Guests nibbled on small bites throughout the evening, and many of them hit the dance floor for a party worthy of the very happy couple.  Wes even jumped on stage to reunite with his former band, charming his new bride in the crowd below.

Ginny + Wes...we have so enjoyed getting to know you these last few months! Congratulations on your new chapter and life in Charlottesville...we want to get together for whiskey at the C+O very soon!  xoxo, A+B.

elizabeth + andrew | engaged!

Lifeandrea

It was a beautiful morning for an engagement session at the Charlottesville City Market! I had to share a preview of Elizabeth + Andrew, who merrily laughed their way through the colorful stalls picking out produce. What a great way to start the weekend!

Elizabeth + Andrew, we are so excited for your wedding next April at Pippin Hill, and I can't wait to share the rest of the images from our time together this morning.  Happy Saturday!

Charlottesville is filled with so many young, talented artists. Painter Kiki Slaughter is one of them, and her contemporary home/studio/gallery was one of the featured spaces in the October issue of Abode. I love the neutral interior of her country cottage that allows her art to shine. Pick up Abode to read more about Kiki and her beautiful space!

The newest Cville ABODE is on stands now! The feature story this month focuses on the live/work studios of three local women; two artists and one designer. I loved meeting each of these women and photographing their lovely, creative spaces.  Each deserves their own post, and today I am starting with painter Abby Kasonik's backyard studio. I love the bright, open space with oversized plants and a collection of unique found objects.

living space 5 | a fry's spring family

Living Space, Spaceandrea

This is the fifth installment of my living space series, in which I spend a few hours in a home capturing the details of the lives lived within its walls.

I was first introduced to Adrienne and her home when I photographed her children's playroom for Cville Abode. We have a mutual friend, Anita, and when I put a request on Facebook for my next living space home, Anita sent me Adrienne's information. I immediately recalled how much I loved the space she's created for her family, mostly from thrifting and salvaging unique pieces. This Fry's Spring bungalow nestled in the trees gave me the opportunity to really play with shadow, and I embraced the moodier feel of rooms when they are lit only by the light streaming through the craftsman windows. I love the subdued palette puncutuated by the ocassional pop of color and Adrienne's eye for spying beautiful pieces in unexpected places.

Thank you, Adrienne, for inviting me into your home!
