732 monticello avenue | charlottesville architectural photographer

on a street in the Belmont neighborhood sits this very classic Charlottesville home...with a twist. Architect Kevin Davis created a beautiful, modern addition to his family's residence, one that boasts a nearly 270° view from the third floor master bedroom and bath. Hello, dream bathtub!

732 Monticello Avenue is ARThouse, a weeklong collision of art, architecture, and antiques. Check it out during Historic Garden Week to see art co-curated by chroma projects and les yeux du monde, along with an up close and personal peek inside the beautiful home, which is for sale!

For sale information about the house, visit the ARThouse website.

bella terra | weeks 1 and 4

Food, Lifeandrea

if you know me, or have read bella eats, you know that I am a big fan of food. especially, local food. i am passionate about cooking and eating seasonally and believe that each one of us can do a little something to support small farmers, chefs, businesses, and individuals making sustainable choices. Two years ago i chronicled brian's and my home garden on bella eats, sharing stories and images and recipes inspired by the food we were growing right in our backyard. this year, i've been lucky to have the opportunity to share a bit of space in the green house at maple hill farm, home of the Local Food Hub. If you're not familiar, the Local Food Hub is a community supported nonprofit working to strengthen and secure our local food supply by supporting small, family farms, increasing the amount of fresh food available to our community, and inspiring our next generation of farmers. I am proud to be part of a community that supports such an organization, and thrilled to have the opportunity to share images of their beautiful land and facilities with you here.

this spring, summer, and fall I will be sharing images from my time at the farm with two girlfriends, emily (local food hub) and stephanie (flavor magazine) as we grow food for our home kitchens. It will be a joint ahphoto and bella eats project, with the bulk of the place and detail photography happening over here, and the final dishes and recipes happening over there. I hope it won't be confusing, and will try to keep it simple. Let's just see how it goes.

below are images from 4 weeks ago, when Emily, Stephanie, and I ventured out to the farm on a rainy and cold March weekend to plant our seeds. We filled twelve flats...twelve! On Saturday we went back out to thin the seedlings, which had all grown to between 1 and 4 inches tall. Happy little seedlings...

blackened redfish

Lifeandrea

happy friday, friends! I hope you've had a pleasant week, despite the not-so-spring weather we had in charlottesville. my birthday was tuesday, and my gift from brian was a set of beautiful cast iron pans. we had to break them in, of course, and the most obvious choice for us was chef paul prudhomme's famous blackened redfish. i am working on a new orleans taco recipe for bella eats which isn't quite perfected yet, but as soon as it is, i'll be sharing!

have a wonderful weekend...will I see you at the charlottesville city market tomorrow morning?!?

commonwealth restaurant + skybar | charlottesville food photographer

Food, Restaurantandrea

Commonwealth Restaurant + Skybar is set to open on the downtown mall this June and I, for one, cannot wait to enjoy people-watching from atop the corner roof deck. This is the newest restaurant project of Alex George, former owner of the much-missed Just Curry, who is opening Commonwealth with four investors. The cuisine is "new american with a south american influence" and from what I sampled at a small dinner Alex orchestrated last weekend, it promises to be delicious.

Congratulations, Alex, on this new endeavor!

clay fitness | charlottesville commercial photography

Spaceandrea

Hello Spring! This gorgeous weather has me anxious for outdoor activity and movement, as does this photo session at Clay Fitness + Nutrition! I met Hyam last summer when I photographed her kitchen, just after she started Clay. In just one year she has expanded to a beautiful, airy space in the Belmont neighborhood. Having seen Hyam's home I can tell that she has put so much of herself into this space, and I truly enjoyed capturing it for her.

Check out the Clay website for a unique and personal approach to exercise and fitness.

the other stuff

Lifeandrea

the light was beautiful today as I photographed a recipe for bella eats. while risotto simmered away i set the table, and noticed that the light was quite nice on the 'other stuff' i was using to style the images. it reminded me of my new living space series, and the importance of capturing details beyond a specific subject...

living space | two designers in charlottesville

Living Space, Spaceandrea

As an architectural photographer I have the opportunity to photograph some really amazing spaces. Typically I am hired by the architect, or the builder, to produce images for portfolios and websites, or for publication in magazines and books. Because those images are all about the architecture, they typically don't focus on the ways in which the occupants of that space have made it their own. The small details that turn the designed shell into a home.

When I walk into a room that I've been hired to photograph, I immediately take note of the space as a whole. I think in terms of my wide-angle lens, determining where to stand the tripod in order to capture the maximum amount of space in a single frame. I look for the existing lines that will make for interesting compositions, the way a chair or couch needs to move in order to reveal a completed edge beyond. Clutter is removed, lamps are swapped out, vases and bowls and sometimes even furniture are brought in and specifically placed. As I look through the lens, an assistant moves a bowl of apples 1-inch to the left, removes and replaces a pillow on the couch, turns a lamp on and then off. The images are styled, and in that process the lives of those who live there is largely removed.  While I enjoy that kind of architectural photography very much, I've wanted to challenge myself to capture living space rather than just space itself. To see beyond the big picture to the finer details of the lives lived within it.

This is a personal project and one I am excited to share with all of you. The first subject of this series titled living space is the home of two Charlottesville designers, an architect and a landscape architect. You're already familiar with Fred's work at Wolf Ackerman (which I've featured here and here and here) and you can see some of Mary's here.

If you have or know of a living space that would photograph well for this series, please contact me here.

This beautiful home is currently on the market. See the listing here!

Lifeandrea

While in Florida for Christmas (how was that one month ago?!?) I had the pleasure of photographing my best friend from college. Jackie and Wes are expecting a baby girl, due to arrive sometime in the next few weeks! I am so excited for them, and can't wait to meet their little one very, very soon.

Congratulations, you two! xoxo.

ten years

Lifeandrea

I didn't make it to my ten-year high school reunion in Florida this past October. Luckily, most of my best high school friends were in town for Christmas and we were able to plan a mini-reunion in Orlando. I hadn't seen most of these amazing people in 6+ years, and some for a full 10! It was such fun to catch up, meet spouses, and see where we all wound up. I'm really proud of each one of these friends, and wish we hadn't all scattered across the country so that I could see them more often. Best of luck to you all; hopefully I'll see you before the next 10 years rolls by!
